The man who ruined Haiti: Papa Doc (François Duvalier).
Dr. Francois Duvalier during his first presidential campaign identified with the poor and the suffering Haitians.
He spent his time in charity events, giving to the poor and community escorted by the clergy; in fact, if he wasn't in a church praying, he was out giving to the community. He won the elections on his first bid!
Then the reign of terror, looting and mismanagement of the nation began.
He abandoned the church, became a voodooist, appointed unqualified relatives and friends into govt, abducted and killed anyone who opposed him, got weapon donations from USA, and divided Haiti into ethnic regions where he created gang leaders to rule. Wait, why was he called Papa Doc?
President Duvalier came to be popularly known as Papa Doc (a name he embraced) because he was highly educated - a medical doctor and a PhD holder.
He considered himself to be so wise, took no advise from anyone but the gods whom he spoke to directly.
