White colonial remnants created the narrative that Africans cannot do commercial farming, and made people believe it. That's how they justified holding on to the best land. That said, the commercial farming model is not exactly suitable for Africa given that it ignores the reality that the only economic activity open to the majority of the population is agriculture. Without access to farm land, this population remains idle and cannot even afford to buy food.
