Police in Bahati, Nakuru County are holding a woman who was found ferrying sandalwood worth Sh2 million to a destination that she is yet to disclose.
The woman suspected to be from Samburu county was arrested with the consignment in Maili Saba area along the Nakuru-Nyahururu highway on Wednesday.
Confirming the incident, Nakuru North Sub County DCI boss Wesley Langat said police managed to intercept the vehicle following a tip off from the public.

Sandalwood is an endangered tree species facing extinction in Kenya.
Mr Langat said the suspect was driving a black Toyota Prado Registration KDC 299D but did not disclose the destination.
Upon search, the officers established that the vehicle was carrying about 500 Kilograms of suspected sandalwood with an estimated street value of Sh2 million.

To domesticate the tree a farmer is given the greenlight to cultivate it after mastering the propagation techniques.

However, the farmer must acquire a permit from Kefri, Kenya Wildlife Services and Kenya Forest Services.

Sandalwood trees can grow to a height of ten metres, are evergreen and bloom throughout the year. They thrive anywhere from fertile valleys to dry mountainsides and derive some of their nourishment from the root systems of neighbouring plants. Slow growing and taking 50 years to reach full maturity, the wood has a lingering scent that can remain for decades, and older trees are considered to have higher oil quality. To make the best use of the wood, the tree is harvested by uprooting it so that even the stump and root, which also possess high levels of sandalwood oil, can be used. The wood is ground so that the essential oil can be obtained through steam distillation.
