Recently, there has been an extra effort by KRA in seeking to find items through the border points in order to increase customs duty. Sasa hiyo maneno imeongeza ndrama since the taxes are quite high leading many to simply surrender the items.

Large consignments of restricted items, including drones and shisha pipes, have clogged customs warehouses at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as importers delay collecting them.

Ms Lilian Nyawanda, Commissioner for Customs and Border Control at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), said many Kenyans imported such items oblivious of the stringent permit conditions before they could be allowed into the market.

“Most passengers are unknowledgeable or un-informed on prohibitions of goods such as shisha and sex toys and restrictions imposed on goods such as drones and firearms,” she told the Business Daily in e-mailed responses.

A huge pile-up of the restricted items at the JKIA customs warehouses has now become a concern with the taxman giving importers a notice to clear them by the end of this month(September).

Items not collected by lapse of the September 30 deadline will be auctioned or destroyed, KRA said.

“The warehouse has very limited capacity owing to the slow rate at which permits are issued for restricted items such as drones or frequency at which destructions are conducted for prohibited imports,” Ms Nyawanda said.

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Regulations require importers to pay a fee of $30 (Sh3,294) for bringing in the drones which are increasingly becoming popular for filming and mapping on agricultural farms, among other uses.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) issues Remote Operators Certificate to fly drones in the Kenyan airspace at a cost of about Sh80,000 with an annual renewal fee of about Sh50,000.

The drones operators further require an airworthiness certificate for $50 (about Sh5,490) in addition to other fees such as "Beyond Visual line of sight" and "Radiotelephone exam".

KCAA director-general Gilbert Kibe said the majority of importers whose drones are lying at the JKIA have failed to register them.

Shida za kujitafutia. Sex toys? Where will the JKIA auction the goods if they're restricted?

Game was just a matter of time before they exited, hio ya Garden City mnajikutanga watu kama 20 pekee..... And Garden City has so many empty shops with new ones closing every month

Mbona every two-cent politician akitaka ku-look in touch with peasants huingilia hospitali and medics?

Private hospitals are a business like any other. Kama mtu hawezi afford Nairobi or Karen mbona aende huko halafu aanze kulia eti amekuwa detained? Unaweza enda Nation Centre uchukue gazeti za bure? Ama uingie Kempinski ukule free utoke? Ama uingie DT Dobie uchukue pick-up utoke?

Then how come PRIVATE hospitals can be expected to treat somebody for 12 months, incurring a debt far far bigger, and then be asked to let go?

Nimesema na nitasema - sisi huwa na shida.

Niko conflicted on this, on one end, in a free market, prices should be determined by the forces of supply and demand....... but there are some critical services where the industry regulator should intervene. The how, nitaachia wajuzi wa Economics and Medicine

Greed, corruption, theft, and unethical practices have taken root in the private healthcare sector. Most operators will seek to make the most money from patients using all sorts of tricks. The situation is more serious for patients paying through insurance cards. A doctor will not hesitate to recommend an expensive and unnecessary diagnostic test even when the symptoms point to the probable cause of an ailment with 99% certainty. Unfortunately, patients have too little knowledge and too much trust in doctors that they will rarely question doctors' decisions even where contradictions are apparent.

I feel you, but from experience always go for second and third opinions and research online as well. Although this can be tricky since not all of us have the capability to understand and come to a decision based on online research. It helps to have a medic in the family or friend.

The drone fees are quite high though I understand this is to deter funny characters and to have control and order.
The sex toys I do not get why they being held, what licenses does one need to trade in these!
Shisha and accessories, thought these were illegal to bring in, someone please clarify.
