Kerugoya boys, Kirinyaga County.
No dormitories or classes burnt.
Just walked out of school.

Hapa hata pia mimi wacha niongeze a personal story. My own father, a military intelligence officer with years of experience in war, alileta that same attitude ya ubeberu kwa nyumba. Each and every one of my siblings walivurugana mpaka wengine moved to Europe na hawakumuongelesha for more than 10 years. Kuna wajukuu my father never saw.

I was the only one he chose to reason with, and he and I didn't have as much issues as the others had with him, although alikuwa na ujinga zake tu.

Mkijifanya wabeberu, kifua mbele, end result ni kuchomewa shule each and every year mpaka ile siku mtaamua kuchukua mkondo mwingine.

These are the things I'm talking about. Hii maneno ya kufanya vitu na kifua kama Magoha tuwachie mkoloni. The education system na polisi ndio wamebaki with the colonial mindset.

It is like I have been speaking greek in this Senate. This is what I proposed including to some teachers and parents when I was in the village over the weekend.

You listen to the way they speak and you would think they are wardens rather than teachers and the students were prisoners.

The solution is so simple yet effective. Engage the students in decision making processes. They need to be or have the illusion of being masters of their own destiny.

Like in the old days, farmers used to even leave their cows grazing outside and in the evening at the exact time, the cows would come strolling into the compound by themselves.

Surely it is like we are beyond using our imagination.

you are dealing with people, even here, keep calling Kenyans fools and think the problem is with the common man instead of the leadership....what do you expect?

They are saying that students dont want to learn. But why are they burning dormitories and not classes?
For the second time I blame the ministry. Who told magoha that the students are in a rush to complete their basic education.
Alaf they come up with rules that they don't even enforce. It's so unnecessary to have those funny classes called remedials. In most of these boarding schools, classes begin as early as 6am and end at 8pm. Can you withstand such kind of torture?

A solution as simple as this, then they end up aggravating the situation by speaking like prison warders in some jail filled with hardened criminals. The demoralisation that happens can make students do anything just to get some sense of dignity back.

Kwanza Magoha is the epitome of such thinking. Imagine holding a PHD and making such infantile recommendations as restoring corporal punishment. I actually hope he succeeds because for sure it will add fuel to the fire which is much needed.

All students at Nyambaria boys Nyamira sent home to report back on 23rd.

No matter what people say,and from personal experience, these guys, the cops, need to show up once in a while in schools. Basically, these youngins are fearful and cowardly and displays of force and no nonsense attitude will killany idea they might have of trying to go against the grain.
Mollycoddling them is what has gotten them where they are today. A few strokes of the cane never killed anyone. Bring it back I say.

Agreed. I know for a fact you will not see any of these recommendations implemented. I expect an escalation once students resume.

The cane never left. Ask students and teachers. Headteachers lie.

Mdau, I think the problem started when Uhuru opened up the country, We used to have lotsa activities which kept these young brains engaged before covid. Music fes, games, CUs outings, Benchmarking,Ac. Trips,Debates...you know! But the ministry still prohibiting such activities. Well, students may have issues which need to be addressed, but nothing concrete to cause all the unrest! Is just a matter of 'Monkey see, Monkey do' From my point of view, I think the ministry of Education should have already lifted the ban on the activities mentioned above. Otherwise, hii yote ni ujinga ya watoto, not all but very few spoilts brats causing all these shit. Also bad parenting is a thing to think of.

Well said sir!

I'll keep saying it as well.

This talk of "Spare the rod..."

And putting the alleged arsonists on a permanent record kwa DCI and thereby denying them an education will only come back to bite us in the end.

These kids will grow up. Bitter. And angry. Into bitter and angry adults.

They will be radicalized by the lack of opportunities. They will turn to all sorts of crime.

Or worse. They will end up being YOUR future ELECTED LEADER.

This rush to "clamp down" and to "nip in the bud" are not real solutions.

Public dialogue. Involving them foremost is the best solution.

Addressing their plights genuinely and not as "just a bunch of kids" will also go a long way.

The best benefit of which, is teaching the future generations the importance of workshopping issues and doing the work to improve conditions.

This is how we rebuild the schools stronger and better.
