As the process of recruiting the next Chief Justice slowly picks momentum, the Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has listed five names of his preferred candidates for this highly coveted rank.
Taking it to Twitter this Saturday, 25 April, Havi has shortlisted five names for the post.
According to Havi, only Ahmednasir Abdullahi, Prof Tom Ojienda, George Odunga, and Prof Joel Ngugi were the only candidates who cannot be manipulated while the Judicial Service Commission's highest office.
"If we could convince the following to apply for Chief Justice: Ahmednasir Abdullahi SC; Prof Tom Ojienda SC; George Odunga JA; and Prof Joel Ngugi JA and monitor the Judicial Service Commission not succumb to manipulation, Judiciary will be independent and accountable come 2021," he suggested.
Nation reported back in February, how the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had set up plans to have the new CJ in place amid CJ David Maraga's retirement plans.
JSC secretary Anne Amadi was quoted saying replacing CJ Maraga was one of their top priority.
“To enhance service delivery in the Judiciary, the commission intends to recruit the next Chief Justice and one Supreme Court judge, 30 superior court judges (High Court, Environment and Land Court, and Employment and Labour Relations Court), 100 magistrates and 300 judicial officers and staff to address case backlog in the judiciary,” Ms Amadi states in the MTEF report, as quoted by Nation.
Kenyans on Twitter have differed with Nelson Havi's selection, with some blaming him for lacking proper advisers on the matter.
