I'm of two minds on this. I think currently the punishment for possession of cannabis specifically is unnecessarily harsh.
On the other hand I recall the time when one could purchase a satchet of alcohol for 10/- and children as young as primary school age would smuggle and drink , and alcoholics could cheaply maintain their lifestyle. More people would be exposed to this lifestyle from childhood. The same could happen with cannabis on increased accessibility.
It's not clear what the long term effects of legalization is to society apart from reducing the load on the legal and prison systems.
The decision needs to be very carefully made. Maybe only legalize it for medicinal use as a start.
