This is Simon Wachira, the owner of Magunas Supermarket,a respected entrepreneur whose journey from hawking in rural Kenya to building a retail and hospitality empire is both inspiring and remarkable. Born in Kiburu village on the Nyeri–Kirinyaga border and later settling in Murang’a, Wachira began his career in the 1980s as a small-time hawker in Mukuyu market. With determination and discipline, he saved enough money and took a small loan to open his first retail shop around 1990. His honesty, consistency, and timely payments earned him trust among suppliers, which allowed him to grow his business into a wholesale venture under the name “Maguna Andu.”
From this foundation, Wachira launched the first Magunas Supermarket in Murang’a at Kwa Maji (now known as Magunas Stage). Over the years, he steadily expanded the business, opening branches in Murang’a, Embu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Meru, Kitui, and Nairobi. Known for offering affordable products, supporting local farmers, and maintaining excellent customer service, Magunas has become a trusted household name in many Kenyan towns.
Wachira didn’t stop at supermarkets. In 2012, he ventured into hospitality, founding Nokras Hotel in Murang’a, followed by the luxurious Nokras Riverine Hotel and Spa in Sagana in 2018. He also developed Kilele Mall in Kenol, adding to his growing list of business successes. Despite his achievements, Wachira remains humble, deeply religious, and committed to giving back to the community famously donating food during the COVID-19 pandemic and providing opportunities for local youth. His story is a testament to what vision, integrity, and hard work can accomplish in Kenya.
