Oman holds the distinction of hosting the largest swahili-speaking population outside of Africa. Between 1700s and 1963, Zanzibar Island was for the most past occupied and ruled by Omani Arabs. Following the independence of Zanzibar from Britain in the early 60s, the previous ruling Omanis faced hostilities from indigenous African population, something that forced many of them to immigrate to Omani. Later in the early 70s, the King of Oman ordered Zanzibar Arabs to migrate to Oman. This cadre of emigrants, most of whom were English-speaking and well-educated, were recruited in large numbers as bureaucrats in the Omani government. Today, it is not unusual to find many high-ranking Omani government officials whose first language is Kiswahili.
