I think it is okay for Baba to retire from opposition politics. His supporters from his Luo community are tired !
His father Jaramogi Odinga dragged his Luo community into opposition politics since the days of KPU opposition to Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and later in opposition to Mzee Arap Moi. However, with Moi, a large number of politicians, university lectures and students from other communities including those from Mt. Kenya region joined the opposition only for some to abandon it after Kibaki and Uhuru presidencies. Politicians like Bildad Kaggia, JM Kariuki and Kungu Karumba were rare opposition voices from Mt. Kenya to Mzee Kenyatta.
No wonder some Luo Politician like MP Otiende Amollo are now taunting wa kina Senator Kipchumba, Senator Aaron Cheruyiot, MP Kuria and fellow tanga tanga politicians to firmly join the opposition . They are being challenged to master the art of maandamano, mapambaano, inhaling of tear gas and stone throwing. Not to mention occasional stints in police remand, lengthy jail sentences, occasional squeezing of private parts and total financial destruction.
Luo Nyanza politicians and their supporters from washemeji and the Coast region since the "handshake" have been quietly saying they are tired of being the bed rock of opposition politics. So other communities can enjoy un-interrupted development in their rural areas and economic growth in general. They are saying that it is now the time for other disgruntled politicians and supporters from other communities to immediately take over from Baba and his Luo community. The poor and marginalized need their fierce opposition voices to hold the government in check. Let wakina MP Millie Odhiambo, MP Grace Wanga sing the praises of Uhuru, Baba, BBI , good governance and development politics in peace and not worry about tear gas every 5- year election circle.
I therefore urge all my Luo friends, colleagues and politicians to concentrate on rural farming, rural economic development and urban entrepreneurship in all parts of the country now going forward. Nobody was born to be an opposition politician.
To be controversial, why is former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero a key target ? compared to other businessmen from other communities who have made billions in shady deals for decades. Lawyers from the Luo community should redirected their talents to defend Luo businessmen or women who are being targeted for creating wealth in the disguise of economic crimes.
Also, starting with Senator James Orengo, these lawyers should now leave national good governance politics and fighting for democratic space to other communities. They should concentrate on serving the local needs of their constituencies in parliament or the senate and those who elected them should always be their priority number one (1). However, we know that their legal services will still be needed to defend the rights of those from other communities accused or persecuted for their political views.
I believe there are other ways of fighting for a cohesive Kenya with it's diverse communities rather that being perennially in opposition to every government of the day.
