The Only Three Major Instruments Of Power Transition In Kenyan History
The instruments of power in Commonwealth traditions are largely symbolic of the seat of authority and the head of government. Just like during war, military commanders carry a sword to sygnify they are the ones who issue command. Stealing the sword can mean a defeat.
In Kenya, the ceremonial sword and the 21--gun-salute are the major symbols used to sygnify transition of power and authority from outgoing to the incoming president. The swords history goes back to the Japanese dynasty, while the 21-gun-salute was adopted from the British government.
Another symbol is the Constitution. The Constitution is handed over as a symbol that the nation is governed by the rule of lay. This is intended to guide the choices that the president makes.
The ceremonial sword is made of stainless steel handle and a gold coated blade. It is traditionally kept at the office of the president in Harambee house in Nairobi.
It is only President Daniel Moi who was given the instruments of power by the Kenya army upon resumption of office in 1978. This was after the death of the first president of Kenya,Jomo Kenyatta.
