How do they make money?

I needed to remove a small mango tree that was in the wrong place and so I called the power saw man. He got me out of bed where I was lazing coz it is a chilly morning.
Twenty minutes later my tree was down chopped into firewood sizes.
What surprised me is that he asked for only 500 (I was ready to pay 2-3k considering he had to be very careful not to damage other things.
I have been left wondering - how dies he make money considering he drove his Toyota Crown to site, then saw cost and his labour?

Size of the tree was small, so he probably used less than one litre of fuel, the power saw cost was probably payed off a l9ng tine ago, unless it was a new one, and the rest is his profit/labour.

It's a fair cost if he is dealing with rural clients, imagine if he charges 500 for one tree and clients will normally come to him with multiple trees....also you just asked for firewood which did not need any special skills, if a tree has to be cut for timber, maybe that is where he makes the big mullah

Probably he had other planned jobs before or after leaving your place, and yours was minor. However, if your Toyota Corolla 70 goes missing a few months from now, we might have a good answer.

Thanks to the free market and competition, everyone benefits.

But if govt regulation comes into the picture they will start demanding licensing fees from him, making him raise the price and also limit the number of people who can do it eliminating competition. In short creating artificial scarcity.

Most probably he was en route to the main client .
I once paid for a generator in Nakuru ,I coughed Ksh 3000 ( transport plus service charge ) .After the generator kufika Kwa site a guy who sells water using a tanker paid the generator fellow Ksh 500 to have the generator power the pump and fill almost 5000 litres .
