Willis Otieno: Our problem is debt. You are paying 70% of your revenue to debt finance. So out of every Sh100 that the people pay as tax, Sh70 goes to debt repayment. And the issue is: you're not going to make progress without questioning this debt we're paying. Is it legal? Is it odious? And if it’s illegal, why should we pay for it? That is why this legacy of politicians cannot open the debt books, because they know they borrowed money in the name of Kenya, and the money never landed in Kenya. What landed in Kenya is the obligation to pay.
Odious debt is the source of all problems:
- Failing healthcare
- Defunding of education
- Squeezing businesses and killing the economy
- Joblessness, hopelessness, civil unrest leading into police brutality
