I understand that, but isnt safety important when they are just travelling? Arent those the kind of sad stories you will hear that an accident occurred and people lost their lives that could have been avoided. And then they can just choose to avoid wearing them when in active duty...is that a big thing to cater for them

Consider environment.

They can be ambushed at any moment. They will need to move quickly to save lives. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Imagine getting stuck in a vehicle under fire because the seat belt is stuck

The one you heard from exaggerated. That can happen only if the grenade explodes when you have swallowed it. A fragmentation grenade breaks into many tiny bullets that will pierce objects (bodies) in their path. Bodies are also injured by the blast energy release which has been described as being hit with a sledgehammer if you are close enough like in percussion grenades which do not fragment.
Have a look at grenade blast injuries images to get a better idea (all the images are gory).
