Getting Ready for a Solar PV System?

If you are planning to go solar in either an off-grid or hybrid system this post will help you understand what you need. Getting everything right from the planning stage will save you a lot of money.

An energy audit is the first stepping stone to building a solar system that supplies your needs at the best economical price point. Below is an embedded spreadsheet that will help you calculate your load . To view the full-size worksheet click on the button located at the bottom right of the embedded window.

The value for watts is often printed on the device, for example, a 10-watt LED light bulb consumes 10 watts. Sometimes though, the value printed is the maximum value and sometimes it's the reactive rather than the apparent power. You can measure the actual power used with a watt meter.

Once you key in all the load values in the worksheet you will be able to know -

- How many panels you will need?
- How big of an inverter should you get?
- Which Battery capacity do you go for and how many?
