An update to the story proves that hii Nairobi, mapenzi ni kama moshi.

The case involving Mercy Awuor – the woman who was allegedly abducted after being lured in with a lucrative job opportunity - has been solved after police nabbed the mastermind behind the whole fiasco.

As it turns out, Awuor staged her own abduction with the help of her husband in a bid to extort money from loved ones.

The National Police Service (NPS) released a comprehensive statement on the evening of Saturday, November 16, narrating how the alleged victim conspired with her husband Gorge Ogada to fake a kidnapping.

Awuor's other partner, Brian Andole, filed a report claiming the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Ksh150,000. The case has since garnered nationwide attention with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) launching an operation to retrieve the kidnap victim.

Investigations led to the arrest of one suspect, Chiranzi Tsuma Mbaru, on November 13, in Gitaru area after his mobile phone was linked to the ransom demand. Still, upon further investigation, authorities established that he was not involved.

Further probing led detectives to Narok South, where they found the victim at her husband Ogada's house. The two have since been taken into police custody.

“On November 16, 2024, the team proceeded to Oldonyo Orok, Narok South where the victim's number was lastly located, and found her at her husband’s house,” a statement from the National Police Service read.

The pair has since been escorted back to Nairobi, where they could face serious charges related to providing false information to law enforcement, an offence under Section 129 of the Penal Code.

Earlier in November, Awuor’s story went viral after her husband went on TV to give a harrowing but suspicious account of how his wife was lured by one phone call.

Notably, Awuor’s partner unknowingly made the story more believable through his active search for his alleged ‘missing’ wife. Through TV interviews, Andore claimed his 'wife' left Nairobi on November 4 to answer to a job opportunity but has been missing since after allegedly getting picked up by individuals aboard a Toyota Probox.

"At 3:00 p.m., I got a missed call. I called back and she told me they had put her in a Probox and were around Maasai Mara," he narrated. "I saw a new number, and a woman was crying. Then someone took the phone and said, "Send Ksh150,000, or I’ll send you a body instead."

After filing a formal report at Kitisuru Police Station, he was referred to Kabete Police Station but claimed the officers were unhelpful.

The case was similar to one in September 2024, when the DCI nabbed three teenagers for concocting a fake kidnapping attempt in a bid to defraud Ksh6 million from the parents of one of their accomplices in Meru County.

The teens, two boys, and a girl, hatched the plot in a get-rich-quick scheme that was quickly foiled by police officers drawn from Imenti North.
