Good people. What are the main issues of owning a diesel car here in Kenya? Are they easier to maintain that petrol cars? What should one be on the look out for?

Do u know that 95 % of all matatus in kenya are diesel powered.the other 5 % are in the yards or running with a for sale sign
And almost all of them hushinda kwa mechanic, thats why am asking whether there is anything to look out for in such cars that petrol cars dont have

Diesel engines do well in suvs n above.kwanza kama hii model most of them ni diesel.very economical.Never be late on service ul lose power n smoke will be visible from the exhaust.most matatus n pickups re use oil trom petrol vehicles.Just buy new

Hehehe, we are assuming ni mimi, anyway i have had bad stories about diesel engines, ndio maana nauliza, wengine wanasema diesel inauzwa hapa kenya ni substandard zinaharibu engines pia

Mazda seems to be doing something right with their transmissions (especially after they started to build them in-house - available from 2015 - current models)
The same goes for their engines not hooked to force induction but still give good fuel consumption figure/efficiency.
Regarding the diesel I think you have to stick to the major petrol stations the likes of Shell or Total . Mercedes CDI has been with us on the saloons for a very long time . I believe servicing is the key thing as indicated by @Johny Mtembezi

Kushinda kwa mechanic haimaanishi engine ndio shida. And anyway, with matatus being on the road for a good number of hours everyday, the rate of wear and tear is increased exponentially. Kuenda garage ni lazima for maintenance.
Main thing with a diesel engine is the diesel particulate filter. Hii ndio itahitaji maintenance every now and then and like a rotary engine, ikimbize kwa highway regularly ndio ijifanyie maintenance.
They are very economical. A good chap of mine has a Peugeot 207 with a turbocharged 1.2 litre engine. He said he'll ensure his grankids are still driving it 50 years down the line...

It's not because of maintainance completely , it's the cost of running a biz with, that is high if you use a petrol engine.
Most people used to buy a petrol van, when the Nissan were introduced to Kenya, and change to diesel engine because of cost of petrol na nguvu pia.

Diesel engines are OK but problem is the quality of our diesel and one more important thing, is how to maintain that engine kama ni hizi european imports.
