As much as I respect Baba, I will beg to differ this time round. I have no qualms doing so as he is undoubtedly one of those people who encourage debate and welcome divergent opinions.
When it comes to Greeks, circumcision is not a foreign or a religious influence but a matter-of-fact normal and compulsory rite of passage.
Long before the pink people came yonder with their religion, the Kikuyus had been practicing circumcision for thousands of years.
As a matter of fact, the way Okuyus circumcise is very unique and intriguing worldwide. Every Okuyu man must wake up early in the morning, get to the cold river to anaesthesia and then face the knife.
Importantly, a true Okuyu must adorn a ngwati as proof of an authentic Okuyu circumcision.
I have gone into all this trouble to make the point that us Okuyus have always circumcised as a matter of course. It is not a foreign influence.
Unless Baba is losing the marbles due to old age, he shouldn’t attribute foreign influence to Okuyus.

If you were a student of history, you would realise that no culture or tribe developed in isolation, they all borrowed from each other - bantus, cushites, nilotes, hunter gatherers etc. There was a lot of assimilation over the years and cultural exchanges of which there's evidence to this day. The Kikuyu circumcision and age set system bears a lot of similarities with those of particular nilotic tribes, for example.
Also, there were no tribes known as kikuyu, luo, maasai, luhya etc 3 thousand years ago. These are all just people groups that emerged as people separated, migrated and assimilated with each other and eventually developed a shared identity. And this will continue for years to come

Exactly. The Kikuyu age set names Maina and Mwangi were borrowed from the Kalenjin's Maina and Nyongi. I have always wondered why they didn't borrow Chumo too.
