Morocco will defend their African Nations Championship (CHAN) title against Mali in Sunday's final in Yaounde after the holders thrashed Cameroon 4-0 in Wednesday's semi-final.
The Moroccans were simply too good for the hosts, as a double from Soufiane Rahimi either side of goals from Soufiane Bouftini and Mohammed Ali Bemammer secured a comprehensive win.

The North Africans secured the title on home soil in 2018 when beating Nigeria 4-0 in the final.

Earlier in the day, goalkeeper Djigui Diarra and Mamadou Coulibaly were the penalty heroes as Mali beat Guinea after the first semi-final ended goalless after an evenly-balanced 120 minutes at Douala's Japoma Stadium.

While Guinea face a Cameroon looking to restore pride in Douala on Saturday, Yaounde's Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium will host the final the following day as Morocco try to become the second team, after DR Congo, to win the CHAN twice.

Key points
  • Morocco are unbeaten in 16 matches in this competition.
  • Morocco have scored 13 goals in five matches at this tournament.
  • Mali have scored just three goals at this tournament.
  • Mali are unbeaten in nine matches in this competition

Third Place finish (Guinea vs Cameroon - today 10pm)

The African Nations Championships enters the final lap this weekend, with only two matches to go. The first will pit Guinea against tournament hosts Cameroon in the third place playoff on Saturday.

Guinea missed the chance to play in the final in the most painful way, falling on post match penalties after drawing 0-0 with Mali and going to the spot kicks. Guinea headed to the quarter finals unbeaten in six matches in this competition but their loss means they can’t go past their best performance in the competition. In 2016,

Cameroon managed to scrap through the group stages then rose from a goal down to beat Congo DR in the quarters. They however found the going tough against the defending champions Morocco, who whacked them 4-0 in the semis.

Cameroon will hope to end the tournament on a high, with a win to reward the home fans. That too may be tough to achieve as they have not been very impressive in attack. Meanwhile, their matches have seen over 2.5 goals scored in the last two and two of the last five matches have produced clean sheets.

Key points
  • Cameroon have two clean sheets in their last five matches.
  • Cameroon have scored more than once in just one game at this tournament.
  • Guinea have three clean sheets in the last five CHAN matches
  • Guinea have failed to score in one of their five matches at this tournament.

Kenyans lost more than Sh300 million in the installation of security equipment in various stadiums, as the country prepared for the African Nations Championship, Chan 2018.

Members of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) were on Wednesday told how the firm contracted by State Department of Sports went bankrupt after it was paid Sh330.5 million.

Kenya was stripped off the right to host Chan due to incomplete refurbishment of the stadiums and heightened political temperatures occasioned by the disputed 2017 presidential election.

The committee yesterday learnt that the company disappeared mysteriously after it was paid Sh330.5 million to install security equipment at various stadiums ahead of the African Nations Championship (Chan 2018) that never took off.

The Syli National and AC Horoya playmaker has been one of the outstanding stars for his side in the biennial tournament

Guinea finished third in the 2021 African Nations Championship after beating Cameroon 2-0 on Saturday at the Reunification Stadium in Douala.

Morlaye Sylla and Mamadouba Camara scored the two goals that saw off the hosts and helped resilient Syli National to finish as the third-best team in the tournament.

A spirited fight by the Indomitable Lions especially in the second half did not produce any meaningful result that would have denied the West Africans a chance to grab the third place.

Sylla, Guinea’s outstanding player of the tournament, struck in the ninth minute after he found his way past Cameroon’s backline and slotted home past goalkeeper Haschou Kerrido.
