Once upon a time, there lived a legend who had bagged a lecturing post at a local university. Nothing wrong here except that he had used his father’s papers to secure the job. How was this possible? One, in shiny-eye land, a Kamau Mwangi will name his son Mwangi Kamau. The two names would pass as the same person on paper. Two, the father had acquired his PhD certificate when the son was already through with college. That means the son’s timeline did not raise any suspicions. Three, the son had a diploma in the same field as the father. This means he had a rough idea of what he was doing. So, the son conveniently combined his diploma certificate and his father’s PhD certificate to get the job. The man taught and taught, and even taught master’s classes. He became more confident by the day and, at some point, decided to push his luck further by applying for a similar position in South Africa. During the interview, things became hot for him. He came face-to-face with the real experts, and could not maintain the façade. Later, the interviewers called his workplace to confirm whether he was who he claimed to be. Of course, he missed the South African job, and doubts were triggered back home. That is how he lost his job at JKUCAT. What’s the mural in the story? Confidence can lift you to the stratosphere before it betrays you to gravity; and the ass-age is not for failing hearts.
