A small taste of Communism

To those who idealize communism, what this regime is giving you is just a small taste of it.

It is all about power and control.

- Concentration of wealth to the top (the political class), everyone else is equal (that is, equally poor)
- Silencing any dissenting voices, big and small. Especially the small voices since it is easier

What has communism got to do with this?

Power and control. Fear of allowing free expression. It's not accidental that politicians are suggesting regulation of social media while giving the example of China
Power and control are not necessarily about communism. They happen even in democratic systems when society allows checks and balances to be eroded so that those in power grow into dictators. Kasongo's Kenya and Museveni's Uganda are cases in point.

Yes, but they are a critical component of communism.
Control becomes a critical part of communist governance because people, being inherently selfish, would want to create disorder so that they benefit individually. Individualism is contra to the ideal of a shared prosperity and leads to situation where sections of society get forgotten because it is everyone for himself and the gods for us all.

Yeah, and then it becomes the animal farm all over again. Some are more equal (the political class) than others (hoi polloi).

Communism is always associated with repressive regimes that eventually fail out of impracticality and unpopularity.

When you concentrate power, it becomes a target for the most narcissistic elements of the society.

The Constitution of Kenya brought govt closer to the people. The adults in these communities get a chance to elect not one, not two, but six representatives every five years.

If they were individualistic and cared about their personal prosperity, they would elect leaders who work for them. But instead, they vote based on bandwagons with little thought about their well being and that's why they end up with narcissists who steal all the resources allocated to them and use it to either inflate property prices in Nairobi or channel funds abroad building foreign economies.

What's the difference with what we have here?

Is the problem communism or the weak governance system? The governance system does not matter if Wanjiku cannot enforce decency in governance. Heck, she's not even sure of the outcome of the electoral process.
Democratic systems are unstable without some level of control.

A comparison of people centered "communist" economic planning vs laissez faire capitalist systems.
