The government is offering a monthly gross wage of 45 000-70 000 Kenyan shillings for interns, rather than the Ksh206 000 specified in the 2017 collective bargaining agreement.

70k is quite little but then 206k was a mistake. Na ndio nasemanga Uhuru was just one incompetent buffoon who deserves nothing but public execution. Why enter into a contract that you know will be difficult to fulfill? Why didn't he pay?

What people are not saying is that Uhuruto signed that CBA under duress in the run-up to elections. Also, that time the interns were fewer.

Paying nearly 1,500 interns 200k each, mostly in allowances, is simply unsustainable.

Incidentally, that is double the salary of a fully-qualified doctor in more than 80pc of African and Asian countries.

Crazy...

It is a difficult argument when you consider the crimes the political class has been perpetuating, and their elephantine salaries too. Lakini this is just dumb. Intern anapewa 200k in this poor country in which universe?

Wakaliwe ngumu. Then next we will also discuss cutting salaries of elected and appointed government officials.

If we have the best paid politicians, even better than some developed countries, why don't we have the best paid teachers, nurses and doctors too?
I'm usually of the view politicians should be volunteers, and given an allowance for basics like food, rent, school fees, healthcare etc.

Very bad idea to allow politicians to make laws amd regulations determining their salary. As long as politics is the most lucrative way of life, while punishing honest business through taxes, unnecessary regulation and corrupt bureaucracy, Kenya and Africa will remain poor.

The unconstitutional intentions of hiring CASs should be dropped for the sake of this.

Good luck with that.
The people you call interns are actually the doctors who do the work in the hospitals. They are the ones called at three am (in spite of having left work at five) when your mother or wife presents with a stuck birth and after managing the emergency rush back home for two hours sleep before reporting back to work in time for when the big guy consultant comes for his 1.5 hrs ward rounds.
They then retreat to their office to see patients for diagnostics. Someone who compares them to an engineer or law intern who goes to the office 8 to 5 is ...I almost said a fool but let me use the word inconsiderate.

Given that the strike was on its 100th day and the doctors were not willing to negotiate, if you were president what would you have done?

Note that he signed because of elections not because he was giving a damn about the consequence of the strike on healthcare. This man repeatedly made decisions only meant to please the masses. Despite their poor pay, he made sure teachers would never strike again by killing their union.

Warped logic.

It's like saying, why do we jail rapists and murderers when corrupt politicians are being let off free?

We're the logic to be applied society would collapse.

Then what?
