Vitamin D is freely available from the sun.
That probably explains why salamanders aren't getting covid.
Do our lifestyles allow us enough time in the sun to make enough D?
It is argued that our dark pigmentation blocks some of the rays that activate D formation so you can't be sure if you are getting enough. - Edit- Research has shown Southern Europeans such as Italians and Spanish who are darker skinned do not process as much as their northern neighbours such as Germans and Finish hence hit harder by the virus.
Recommended you take a fish oil with vit D supplement to be sure you have the Recommended Dietary Allowance.

Good point. From the article:

Rates are even higher in winter, and several groups have notably worse deficiency: the overweight, those with dark skin (especially far from the equator), and care home residents. These same groups face increased COVID-19 risk.
