A Sage once declared that “insanity is doing same thing over and over and expecting a different result”.
Murkomen’s dubbed “13 points rules” validates this saying very well.
There is completely nothing new, drastic or innovative that he has recommended.

All those directives that he has ordered have been tried since Moi days without changing or improving road safety.
If anything, these measures have just cemented Traffic Policemen and NTSA’s hongo avenues.

What needs to be done to improve safety on the roads is a drastic change of our driving culture.
We need to instil a new perspective and awareness on the driving populace.
Speed-governors, Traffic Police and all those enforcement bids will not change our driving habits.

Public transport, heavy goods drivers as well as motorists need to realise that safety is paramount and has to be intentional.
We take too many chances and gambles while driving, overtaking and even parking. Pedestrians cross our roads anyhowly and willy-nilly without any safety considerations.

You see Matatu drivers attempting to overtake everywhere even on bends, narrow bridges and even on junctions!
It is like nobody wants to be behind anybody else.

Changing our driving culture should start from the Driving Schools and their curriculum.
The Driving Examiners should be sanctioned and sacked if they pass someone who goes ahead to cause a fatal accident soon after passing.
The Insurance Companies can help by refusing to insure drunk, drugged and accident-prone drivers.

It is only by being tough and methodical that road safety can be improved.
