My pedestrian observation, the tomatoes in our market no longer rot in two or three days as used to be the norm back in the 80's,90's and early 2000's.
Left some tomatoes in my residence and was away for two weeks, to my suprise on my return on Sunday, they were still intact although they had some degree of shrivelling. I am still using them three days down the line.
Who has the explanation for this?

Was a mite of a boy, back then this meant you are your mom's errands boy, used to do her shopping under strict instructions, 'nunua Kwa mama Nani na umuambie ni Mimi nimekutuma?' we had shopping centres in Nairobi then, where you could do all your shopping.

Not really , just messed up city planning , lots of public spaces stolen .

Who has the explanation for this?

It has to do with the varieties farmers choose. We are slowly adopting the Western trend, where a product's appearance and shelf-life take precedence over everything else. I have had difficulties looking for the much smaller tomato varieties we had in the past, which fewer farmers grow, but which taste much better. Nyanya za kitambo ukiweka kwa sukuma ama nyama zinabadilisha chakula inakuwa tamu saidi. Not any more. Next will be fruits, where farmers will slowly migrate to those with good appearance and long shelf-life. I now cherish the small, sweet Ukambani mangoes more upon realizing they won't be around forever.

There is a book called "The Dorrito Effect" which talks about this. The author talks about chicken which nolonger tastes good without spices tomatoes which taste bland these days
