Today in history: April 13

On the thirteenth of April 1953 CIA director Allen Dulles approved launched the mind control programme dubbed 'Project MKUltra'. It entailed a series of experiments to see how hallucinogenic and psychedelic drugs such as LSD, ecstasy,mescaline, heroin, barbiturates, methamphetamine and psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”); along with paralytics and electroshock therapy could be used for mind control, information gathering and psychological torture. From 1953 to circa 1973, over 150 human experiments under the program were carried out. The United States believed that the Soviets, Chinese and North Koreans had been able to brainwash American prisoners of war captured during the conflict in Korea, MKUltra was an attempt to get an upper hand over the USA's enemies at the time. Many of the participants were unnaware that they were taking part in the programme, and most of the records were destroyed in 1973 when the programme ended.
