Agriculture CS, Peter Munya, told parliament fertilizer prices in Kenya could skyrocket to Kshs 7,000 per 50kg bag due to the Ukraine war if there is no subsidy. Says Kenya gets most of its fertilizer from Russia and China.

High fertilizer prices means farmers have to pass on the costs to everyone through higher food prices to stay in business.

Wheat flour prices to go up on Russia–Ukraine conflict. Bread to cost Sh5 more with 2-kg wheat flour price increasing to Sh200.

Kenya relies on both Ukraine and Russia as one of the key exporters for grain as they account for 33 per cent of global wheat supplies.

What is it about fertilizer and wheat that it can not be grown/manufactured in Kenya?

If anything, this is a wake up call. We can't be importing basic things like even corn! Toothpicks!

Tell me, if the ban of polythene bags was accompanied by a mandated sourcing of replacements locally, how many jobs would have been created?

Kenyans are addicted to politics but woefully equipped for proper governance.
