Chris Kirubi, the Kenyan oligarch

Why should citizens cast ballots if one – a single – oligarch can walk into the inner sanctum of power and make major policy?

Many moons ago, I was having a drink with an old man from our sub-county, I had some fiashara in nyamakima and the guy I had gone to see introduced me to the old guy, he had a few flats here and there but he wasn't (kirubi) like rich. Anyhow we sat for a few bottles and I loudly wished I could see the president, because it would help me in one way or another. After many bottles we parted ways. My friend called me the following morning and asked me if I was serious about meeting with the president. Long story short, by that afternoon I had a one on one with the president. The old man had access to the state that even ministers could only dream about.

Yes. I later came to learn that if you wanted your son/daughter to join say utalii college on those reserved placements, you just needed to see him. Police force, he'd take you to Kiganjo a few days after admission of the guys who ran to get in, his vetting was final. Same for the military! Deep state only has a few visible faces.
During Mo1s era, when he was out of political limelight Mark Too was Deep state. A behind the scenes guy who continued to control things during M01s era and Kibakis era.
Chris Kirubi was a bit too showy for this role, unless he was just a mouth piece.
