Canon Samuel B. Kuri. The first African Canon of the early Christian Church in Kenya. He wore no shoes, until his death, believing the ground to be holy.
Samuel Bartholomew Kuri wasn't native to Rabai, he was born in 1860 in Digo land. Together with his kin, he came to Rabai in search of food due to famine. His sister was captured and taken in as a slave to an Arab master in Old Town, Mombasa.
He lived to 103 years old and lies buried in the Rabai Missionary Cemetery. He was married to Alice Mjeni, a Giriama of the Mwamkweha clan. Their daughter (Hope), died much earlier than son Foster.
