In order to prevent this catastrophe, off-roaders can be equipped with a long tube connected to the engine's air inlet extending to the roof. That way there's much reduced chance of ingesting water. They’re called SNORKELS and do exactly the same job as snorkels for human divers.
A vehicle snorkel helps your car to “breathe” when wading through bodies of water, by taking in clean air from above the water, and preventing water from making its way into the engine, to maintain optimal air flow and temperature.
Advantages of a snorkel.
