Sgt Jilalo Gafo was a Somali from Galicho, Garissa District in Kenya. He Served in the King’s African Rifles: part of 11th East African Division, Burma, during WWII. He was awarded the Military Medal when KAR pushed the Japanese back through the Kabaw Valley, this took the offensive to the Japanese in 1944.

The 4th (Uganda) Battalion, The King's African Rifles, waiting to embark at Thika Station in Kenya, en route to the war against Japan in the Far East. They had already served with distinction in Ethiopia, helping to defeat the Italians.
