Tattooed Acolytes

In the mayhem that is the MCA'S baraza there was a bizzare clash on tattoos and their significance, the thread got derailed on the aspects of middle class but in general it seemed talkers had no grasp on the importance of bodily marks.

Below, is a piece from Dan Brown's The lost Symbol.

'The goal of tattooing was never beauty, the goal was change. From the scarified Nubian priests of 2000 b.c to the tattooed acolytes of the Cybele cult of ancient Rome, to the moko scars of the modern Maori, humans have tattooed themselves as a way of offering up their bodies in partial sacrifice, enduring the physical pain of embellishment and emerged changed beings.

Despite the ominous admonitions of Leviticus 19:28, which forbade the marking of one's flesh, tattoos had become a rite of passage shared by millions of people in the modern age-everyone from clean cut teenagers to hard core drug users to suburban wives.

The act of tattooing ones skin was a transformative declaration of power, an announcement to the world: I am in control of my own flesh. The intoxicating feeling of control derived from physical transformation had addicted millions to flesh-altering practices... cosmetic surgery, body piercing, body-building and steroids.

Even bulimia and transgendering.

The human spirit craves mastery over its carnal shell. '

Your body, your choice. However, the society may ostricize(sp) you for that choice. You have every right to do it. I wouldn't allow my child to get one though.

On the contrary, some people are content with their ink and were sensible enough to be a patron to a hygienic set up.

As far as sin goes, perhaps you'd do well to remember that Christianity is a hybrid religion with paganistic roots

It most certainly will, particularly our society which is a mix of Christianity and waning African Culture.

a woman with a tattoo is a no go zone ; amerix 2021. Ask any random person on the street what they think about a tattooed woman . You don't have to justify your choices , get one and you'll see the results.

I wonder why Africans we are busy aping negative culture from America but we can't copy the positive ones.

I am actually planning on getting one done. I have always been a non conformist. I am not society. I am an individual. I don't give a damn what people will think.
Good for you, I hope you find an art that resonates with your core rather than a passing fad.
How does this relate to modern-day tattooing?
It's loosely based on the same philosophy, of disembarking on conservative views and offering a piece of yourself for an ideal.
Where I come from, tattoos are for prostitutes and criminals.
Period.
Well ma'am I don't believe people getting ink are interested in relocating to where you come from.

Perceptions are everything, which is why you ought not to take random peoples opinions to heart.
