1. EDWARD MAINA SHIMOLI AKA 'The Jackal' He got nicknamed 'Carlos the Jackal', the Venezuelan terrorist who escaped from the police on multiple occasions. He was one of the most slippery criminals in Kenya's history. For more than a decade, he succeeded in staying away from the police . It is also worth noting that he escaped jail 4 times by bribing and tricking wardens. He confessed to 14 murders, 88 rapes plus a string of bank robberies and drug deals in a decade-long crime spree. In 1996, with the help of his accomplices, he made a daring move by staging an escape from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison shortly before he was to be hanged. He is famed for having caused a scene at Uhuru Park, within the heart of Nairobi during a gunfight between him and a dozen policemen. He shot and wounded 5 of them. He is also known for having incorporated also women in his criminal gang. Maina Shimoli was finally shot dead in 2007 along Kangundo road.
2. JOHN 'BATISTA' KARIAMITI. Born in 1950 in Central Kenya, John Kiriamiti is a former bank robber turned renowned writer. Kiriamiti was a Form One dropout, having dropped out of Nairobi School before joining crime. The school was then known as Prince of Wales and had a lot of white people who he says were were racist. Kiriamiti was identified as one of the ringleaders when chaos ensued in retaliation. He had been suspended from school and told to go and bring his parents with him. But given that his parents were very strict, going home was out of question hence he ran into the streets of Nairobi and started his life in crime.
He was arrested in 1971 and jailed for 20 years in prison. While serving his sentence, he started writing his famous novel My Life in Crime. He was released 13 years later for portraying good conduct. However, he was jailed again in 1986 after being accused of being part of those planning to dethrone the then president Moi and later released.
3. GERALD WAMBUGU MUNYERIA ALIAS WANUGU Wanugu started criminal activities in the late 80s and was part of a gang that terrorized Kenyans until the 90s.He was a famous bank robber, managing to outrun the elite flying squad police unit plenty of times. This was until 1996, when his illustrious career came to an end in Nakuru. Both he and his girlfriend were sprayed with bullets when they were spotted running errands together. Wanugu reportedly tried to use his girlfriend as a human shield, hoping for a negotiation.
4. ANTHONY NGUGI KANAGI ALIAS WACUCU He was part of a gang that reigned supreme for almost a decade in the 80s and 90s. He committed multiple murders, armed robberies and bank heists. He was able to out run the police during car chases since he was a former matatu driver with exceptional skills. In 1996, he was gunned down in Rongai, Kajiado
5. BERNARD MATHERI ALIAS RASTA He and his wife together commited crimes. Their gang consisted of 4 people : • Timothy Ndegwa ( currently serving life in Kamiti) • His wife( arrested and jailed for seven years, two years after Matheri's death) • John Kibera(Famous Coffin Thief) Rasta was killed in 1997
6. PHILIP ONYANCHA He is said to be the most brutal and terrifying serial killer in Kenya's history. It is claimed that he killed and drunk the blood of seventeen women as part of a satanic ritual. In July 8, 2021, the self confessed serial killer was saved from the hands of the death penalty in one of the three murder cases he was facing for lack of evidence.
7. SIMON MATHERI IKERE At one time, he was the most wanted criminal in Kenya. He was a hired assassin who was being paid Kshs.500,000 per kill. He committed a series of murdes and other violent crimes. He was arrested and jailed for arson for 5 years in Kamiti Maximum Prison. In his short career, Matheri was said to have shot and killed or wounded very prominent people. He lived a simple but wild life. His house had been surrounded by 100 policemen when he was finally killed. They demanded that he come out of his house where he was with his wife and his bodyguard, Elias. His wife pursued him to get out. Matheri finally came out with the bodyguard before being shot several times
