Some Businesses had no chance

Looking at how quickly things have changed over the past 2 decades, some companies had no chance.

I’m just thinking of KPD - Kenya Postel directories- the company that makes the yellow pages directory.
What could they have done coz right now their competition is google. Perhaps maybe it would have been to build a culture around the use of the physical directories, same way guys still buy the daily paper regardless of the fact that all news is also on the internet.

I was curious and looked at their website and they basically have no information that I can’t get more efficiently via google. In fact their information is skeleton compared to google.

They had time to respond to changes in the industry they just didn't, they could have leveraged the contacts and existing relationships with businesses to provide an online presence, google initially struggled in the same space with their getting kenyan businesses online initiative remember the debacle with mocality? my verdict is that they failed to innovate in the face of change, similar to Nokia, blackberry, sega, myspace, toshiba, kodak, IBM... the list is endless

In my opinion, Kodak is slowly dying. Look at its share price at the NYSE. Look at its valuation. Yet the company held the digital photography patent for eons but delayed in actualizing that dream. What was hard for them to partner with the big boys in the mobile telephone industry? Every penny from a purchase of an iPhone or Samsung would earn them a commission. But what do I know. Btw I lost my job in a company I was helping to innovate. But old thinking....sigh....anyway, mniombee nirudi back stronger and better

They preferred to sit on their laurels rather than innovate a public addressing system which can be used across Africa. It's critical for their business to have a proper way to find business and house addresses

Yellow Pages had a chance, lakini inakaa kufikiria among these fossil companies imekuwa shida kubwa. Posta had Royal Mail and USPS to look up to lakini kazi ni kufyonza pesa na kutofikisha parcels. Yellow Pages could have gone the Yelp route with all the info they have/had.

There are some websites that have been around and others coming up that are sort of a hybrid of what Yellow Pages used to do and what Yelp/Angie's List/Home Advisor are doing in the US. Some like Kenyaplex decided to focus on schooling. PigiaMe began as a business directory before heading the OLX/Classifieds way. The others here, let's wait for whether they will innovate or go dead.

As it turns out, there were various websites that attemprted to fill the gap left by Mocality, some even raising over $200,000 but they still ended up folding. Weh!! Could it be the business model they were using was terrible ama it could be other issues within the company?
