Ruth was born in the land of Moab,a border nation and frequent enemy of Israel. Her name means “female friend.” Moab was considered a pagan nation. The people who were not Jews were known as Gentiles. This implies that Ruth was a gentile. She was a daughter-in-law of an Israelite family. Elimelech had a wife known as Naomi. Elimelech took Naomi and her two sons by the names, Mahlon and Kilion to Moab due to famine in Israel. While in Moab, his sons married Moabite women by the names Orpah and Ruth. Ten years later, Elimelech and his two sons died. Three widows were left to fend for themselves. Naomi decided to go back to Israel because she heard that God had blessed the people in her homeland greatly by giving them bumper crop harvests. She told her daughters-in-laws as they way on their way to go back to their families, as there would be nothing for them in Israel.Orpah made a choice to return back to her family but Ruth begged her mother-in-law not to send her away. The bible records the most beautiful statements by Ruth…But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and you God will be my God…”.1
This was a great commitment being made by a daughter-in-law to a mother-in-law, we expect this commitment to come from young men and ladies as they are about to be joined in marriage. As you read this book you will realize that Ruth did not break this commitment. When Naomi saw Ruth determination, she allowed her to go with her to Israel. The two widows with no man to take care of them had limited survival options.
