How often do we pay more for less? Very often I would say. Why does this happen? A number of reasons. One, a consumer often lacks the expert knowledge to correctly gauge the value of what he is paying for, and manufacturers have no way of communicating every aspect of a product to the consumer. Two, manufacturers will use all sorts of persuasion to sway customers, confusing some in the process. Third, a consumer may lack access to choices, which forces him to take whatever is available.
The above reflection was inspired by a recent event. I went looking for a scouring pad the other day and happened to pick on a 3M scouring pad from a dozen other brands.
This was a random choice like I have done many times before, given they are all the same in size and pricing. Surprisingly, upon using the scouring pad, I was astonished it lasted almost 4 times what a regular scouring pad covers. Despite this elation, I was also partially depressed that such a superior product should be competing for shelf space with third-rate products and the customer has no way of telling. This got me wondering how often I have paid more for less even when I had the opportunity to make a better choice.
Addendum: Not used for sufurias.
