This is Omar Al Mukhtar, a revolutionary leader who historically led the revolution agaisnt the Italian occupation of Libya for almost 20 years, comonly known as 'The Lion of the Desert'.

Omar spent his youth studying Islam and spent many years teaching Quran until 1911 when the Italians invaded Libya. Now 51 years old, his life was about to take a new turn.

Determined to defend his country, Omar and his small groups of men skillfully attacked outposts, ambushed troops, and cut important supply routes, astonishing and embarrassing the highly advanced Italian Royal Army and its troops who were half his age.

Omar's character and integrity impressed even his enemies, sticking to Islamic and African principles during the horrors of war and brutal occupation . He famously said, "we do not kill prisoners, they do it to us. They are not our teachers."

After 20 years of fighting, inflicting defeats and setbacks on the Italian invaders, Omar was captured at the age of 73 . He was offered many deals and bribes, to call off his men. Not wanting to let his men down, and his country's ambition to freedom, he REFUSED. He said, "We will never surrender. We win or we die."

On September 16th, 1931 Omar Al Mukhtar was matyered by hunging.

Omar Al Mukhtar is gone but his legacy will stay forever. He is an ispiration to the African continent and a hero that will be celebrated forever.
