People talk about the story of Onan in the Bible, the man put to death by God for using withdrawal method, but they don’t tell the whole story which is quite intriguing. Judah had three sons; Er, Onan and Shelah. Er married a woman called Tamar, but he died not so long after, even before getting a child. It is not indicated what he did, but the Bible says he was wicked and God put him to death. As it was the custom that time, Onan who was the second born was instructed by his father to take up his late brother’s wife and get a child. But as we know, Onan was not of that idea. So he used to 'beat' things and when it was time to pour, he would expertly withdraw and pour outside. God was not happy with this behaviour, and He killed Onan. That’s why men are encouraged not to pour outside, as it has gotten someone killed by God in the past. For the Arimis battalion, I have no words for you.
But the story now got more interesting. After the death of his two sons, Judah was worried that giving the widow his last son Shelah, would also lead to his death like the first two. So he instructed Tamar (the widow) to go back to her father’s house and wait until this son was old enough to marry her. Tamar went back to her father’s house ‘neck aside’ (shingo upande), but had a crazy plot in mind to get back to the Judah family. To put it into the Kenyan context, Tamar is like a Kabete woman, married to a rich Nyeri family and is eyeing to end up with a slice of the property. You know when Kabete women see property, satan enters them. That’s why men there only declare half of what they own, otherwise you may one day start eating supper at 9pm as Lilian Muli starts the news, alafu umaliziwe hizo news na St Veronica or whoever reads the news up there. Whether she is of women’s guild, CWA, Mukorino or even the church of many waters, living with a Kabete woman is like keeping a king cobra as a pet.
So around the same time, Judah’s wife passed on. Sometimes he would even climb persons of the night. So Tamar got to know about this and hatched a plot for her father in law. So she disguised herself as a prostitute and put herself in his way. When Judah saw her, he said he wanted to be pressed boil there and there. They negotiated the price and booked rumu, and Tamar said all she wanted was a goat in payment. Judah said he didn’t have a goat at the moment as he was travelling, but that they would talk after he ‘finished.’ Unlike Nyairofi trappers, he was allowed to climb in peace and finished peacefully. However, when he finished, he was told to bring the goat there there or she screams and attracts attention. In fear, Judah said he would leave her his seal (equivalent of ID card), and that he would send her the goat the following day. Tamar must have said; Yage wone! When he got back home, he sent someone with a goat so that he could retrieve his ID, but the trapper could not be located. After searching unsuccessfully, he gave up and said he would apply for another one. What he didn’t know is that Tamar had a Karee card hidden under the table, or in what Greeks would say, she had ‘buried a mongoose’ for him because she had actually conceived when they slept together.
A few months later, still in her father’s house, it was revealed that Tamar was pregnant. When Judah heard of the news that his daughter in law was being climbed all over and was now pregnant, he declared she should be brought out and burnt to death. However, when men came for her, she gave them Judah’s seal and told them that the owner of that seal was the father of the child she was carrying. Judah was in utter shock. She must have threatened to give more details of how it all went down because she was not punished at all.
Anyway, she proceeded to have healthy twins, Zerah and Perez. Perez went on to become an ancestor to king David and even later to Joseph, the husband to Mary.
