Officers from the DCI have arrested two suspects for colluding to defraud one of the suspects’ parent by claiming she had been kidnaped.

According to the officers, “Jane Wamuyu, a resident of Sattelite in Riruta, received disturbing messages from her daughter’s phone number. The message informed her that her daughter Claire Muthoni had been kidnapped and her captors were demanding a ransom of Ksh 30,000 to secure her release, failure to which, her throat would be slit open.”

The purported kidnappers proceeded to send a photo of Muthoni, with her hands and legs tied and a kitchen knife displayed next to her, sending Muthoni’s mother in a fit of panic.

Wamuyu who had been warned against disclosing anything to the Police, defied the order and reported the matter at Karen Police Station.

Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau took over the matter with intelligence investigations leading them to Misiani village in Kangudo.

The detectives were however in for a rude shock after they found out there were no kidnappers. Instead they found Muthoni at a local Bar accompanied by a friend identified as Diana Wanjiku.

The two had taken up residence at Website Bar, after escaping from Nyeri where they both lived.

After intensive interrogations, detectives realised that Muthoni had hatched the plan to stage her own kidnapping, and demand a ransom from her mother.

The two are now in lawful custody awaiting arraignment
