Kalonzo was more popular than Raila in 2006. So it's not a sure bet that siding with Kibaki would have made him president in 2013.

Kibaki didn't even seem to want a second term, and had zero interest in picking a successor once his time was up. He certainly would not pick the guy he screwed once before in 2002, who then gave him such a hard time in 2007/8, and then proceeded to block him at every turn when they were "power-sharing". Besides, power is seized never given. Once upon a time Raila understood that. But in 2017 he folded and that's how he screwed his presidential ambitions for good.

Kalonzo may have been popular in ODM, but Raila was the man to beat at the national level. All Raila would have needed is Kibaki's neutrality on the matter of presidential candidates.
