The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) released a statement confirming it will cater for expenses incurred by Covid-19 patients in selected hospitals.
The statement dated Friday, July 24 by NHIF CEO Peter Kamunyo confirmed they the agency had gone against the insurance policies of covering epidemics and pandemics.

"The health and wellness of our members, is of utmost importance to us, and in support to the government's efforts in mitigating and containing the spread of Covid-19, we shall support all Covid-19 positive members and their declared beneficiaries who get admitted to the Ministry of Health designated facilities," read the statement in part.

The listed health facilities where members can get NHIF cover for Covid-19 include-
    1) Kenyatta National Teaching Referral Hospital,
    2) Kenyatta University Teaching,
    3) Referral and Research Hospital,
    4) Mbagathi County Hospital
    .

Aside from the named hospitals, members can also get cover at county-designated facilities and any other facility as may be designated by the Ministry of Health.
NHIF, however, stated that it shall not be liable for bills incurred in non-Ministry of Health designated health facilities.

On Wednesday, July 15 Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman revealed that the ministry was in talks with insurers to revise their policies.
"I think it's not only NHIF, the entire insurance industry is in a situation where they have to look and review their policies because Coronavirus was not there before when the inclusions and exclusions were set.

"It is a process of reviewing this and seeing what the implications mean in terms of cost but I can tell you that discussions are on going," noted Aman.
This comes after the country has been reporting a surge in Covid-19 cases that now stands at 17,975 with 285 fatalities as at July 27, 2020.
