Ngwiko: Kikuyu’s sacred practice that was destroyed by White people

Field Marshal

Elder Lister
While various Gikuyu localities may have practised different forms of ngwiko, there are several untruths in Meria's story.

1. The act of ngwiko was not sacred. It was a normal practice for young people to release sexual steam.

2. While penetration was not allowed, the male could have what can be called 'thigh sex' - the girl was allowed to apply some oil on her thighs to reduce friction for the guy's dick, hence ngwiko ya maguta. The guy was allowed to mwaga AS LONG as he was not inside.

3. As Madam Mawaya has said, it was the duty of the gal's cucu to ensure that the gal was not penetrated. She did this using several tricks including visual examnation and tying the mwengu in such a way that the gal would have it tricky retying it.
