Nairobi Fly or Narrow Bee Fly?
For decades, that colourful insect that causes an itchy sensation and blisters when brushed or crushed against the skin has been referred to as the ‘Nairobi fly‘.

However, the last 3 or so years have seen a lot of confusion online, as some blogs and social media users ‘corrected’ this term and told us that the actual term is actually ‘Narrow bee fly’.

It started with the famous social media posts a few years ago which ask people people how old they were when they found out something. They go something like, ”I was today years old when I found out that..”

Before social media the Daily Nation told us that it was Nairobi eye...named so by wazungu who suffered it's wrath with most injuries around the eyes.
And, well, it is not a bee - it is a bettle, and certainly not a fly though it flies.

And wikipedia does not help in clarifying the mess....

Huku ukambani kuna an insect which bites then lay an egg on you. Mimi nimekuwa a host for sometime especially if you love to lay urself on some lawn. Now, when the egg hatches, inaanza the larvae start to eat your flesh polepole. Hapo unalala ndethe kwa bed then wife anasquize out the fuckers.
