is soon replacing the CAUSEWAY that was built in 1929. The Bridge is of course BIGGER and WIDER. Beyond that, MARINE LIFE will be RESTORED. The causeway restricted free flow from either side. June 2022 is the completion date..

Makupa Cause Way. under construction 1898
Makupa is short for "maji yamekupwa" which means the water has fallen ,it is recorded that in the old caravan days it was at Makupa where people used to cross from the island of Mombasa to the mainland ,whenever the level of water went down..
The original Makupa Bridge was also known as the Salisbury Bridge. Named after Lord Salisbury who was British Prime Minister from 1895 to 1902 (and previously from 1885 to 1892).
