I wouldn't say its barren and futile, just that some of the arguments proposed arent convincing or simply fall flat.
I'd say you are partially correct. True we are limited in understanding. But at that limit is where we should admit we don't understand and answer I dont know. The problem we have is that many religions will puport to know the thing beyond our understanding is some deity of sorts. And time and time again we find a naturalistic explanation.

science can also make people believe in God even more...there are cases where even doctors are not able to explain how a person has survived and is still alive even when science says otherwise
That kind of scientist will be a religious person first and then a scientist second. The best and the truest scientist will forever look for a logical explanation. And it is okay for a scientist to say I don't know, I have no idea, I can't tell.
And what is in it for an atheist to do good while there's no expectation for rewards here or hereafter?
Because it feels good to do good. I feel happy when I relate with someone in a positive way. I feel happy when I can relate with my neghbour. I'm happy when I see you have success. I want you to have a happy family.
What if they cannot find a logical explanation?
And there they find my Jehovah, when they can run back time to billionths of a second after the big bang and know that the ingredients of the universe are matter, energy and space itself to forwarding time enough to know that the universe will freeze over to nothing, no more energy and all in between is very structured and ordered for it to be fluke. They always say there has to be an "intelligent designer" my Jehovah.
What`s the greatest law in the Bible? Love is. Love comes by as a result of choice, free will to chose someone or not. Love your wife or husband or not. In Deuteronomy 30:15 Jehovah gave the Israelites choice, it was ultimately for them to choose not robots who had no say in their lives and that`s the loving nature of my Jehovah and ironically the same Jehovah capable of hate, He`s Sovereign.
So, what's wrong with saying there is no proof that god exists?
Do good because it benefits everyone. Or just because its a good thing to make someone's day/life easier. There doesnt need to be a reward.
Then you leave it at that until you can. Say there is something going on here and i cant explain whats happening.
There is nothing wrong with that. No shame at all. You forward your unique case to more experienced people who might come up with an explanation.
what if a whole school cannot find an explanation, what if a whole generation still cannot find an explanation?
What if the person mentions to you that they have been praying about it and they had faith to be healed? do you just trash their faith and yet wewe mwenyewe you have just witnessed what they call a miracle?
Nothing wrong with that, still. So many phenomena are ununderstood and so unexplained and life still goes on as countless people try to find their secrets. The habit of dismissing all that we don't understand as God's work is really backward.
