Three things you need to consider, good breed, fodder and market.
For fodder ensure umezizoesha hay and make your own silage(this should be sufficient for over 6 months if you preserve well and I ensiled alot of corn),..then kuna dairy meal, and minerals
Mrkt, ensure u sell ksh40/kg and u'll be ok
On breed, ensure you get good cows
