How to pay for NHIF cover

NHIF, which stands for National Hospital Insurance Fund is a government corporation that provides health insurance to citizens.

In order to be eligible for NHIF cover one has to be a Kenyan citizen and has attained the age of 18 years with an income from employment or is self-employed or is a foreigner permitted to work in Kenya.

Before paying for NHIF one has to be a registered member with the corporation, here's how to register for NHIF cover;
  • NHIF registration form
  • A copy of your National ID, including your partner's if applicable
  • Recent colored passport size photos, including dependants and partners(If available)
  • A copy of the Employer appointment letter if employed.
After filling the registration form accordingly, it can be taken to the nearest Huduma Center for processing. You will be provided with your NHIF number and instructed to pick the card at a later date.

Now that you're registered, you can start contributing according to your income if employed and Sh500 per month if self-employed.

Payments can be made using Mpesa as follows;

Step 1: Go to Mpesa menu and select Lipa na Mpesa, select the Paybill option

Step 2: Click on enter business number and input 200222

Step 3: Enter your Nation ID number as your account number.

Step4: Enter the amount (Sh500)

Step 5: Confirm if all the details are correct, input your pin and send

You'll receive a confirmation message from Mpesa and NHIF for validation of your payment.

Paying for your NHIF cover enables you to receive treatments at selected hospitals, as an in-patient or out-patient, Maternity cover, and also receive treatments at discounted rates.

Avoid penalties, try and pay for your NHIF cover every month.
