Nairobi to Splash Ksh500 Million on Anne Kananu's New Home

The County Government of Nairobi will spend Ksh500 million to acquire new houses for the Governor and her deputy. The latter position is, however, still vacant.
Reports indicate that City Hall will spend the money in purchasing palatial homes for Governor Anne Kananu and her deputy.

Documents tabled before the Nairobi County Assembly by the Budget and Appropriations Committee and quoted by the Business Daily indicate that in the annual County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) for the Financial Year 2022/23, City Hall intends to purchase homes in some of the posh estates within the city.

“The County Government of Nairobi plans to purchase Governor’s and Deputy Governor’s residences amounting to Ksh500 million in the next financial year which begins on July 1, 2022,” read part of the report.

Notably, this plan will be contravening a financial directive by the Senate. City Hall will be spending more than five times the Senate’s cap for such a project.

Senate recommended that for such a project, the governor’s official house should not cost more than Ksh45 million, the deputy's home should not exceed Ksh40 million and the County Government should not spend more than Ksh35 million for the Speaker's home.
Further, the allocation comes against a 2020 directive by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to all the 47 counties to build residential houses for their leadership within two years.

SRC noted that building a house would help counties cut down on monthly rent expenditure.
The National Treasury had raised concerns over the continued spending of Ksh5 million in monthly allowance to governors, Ksh4.5 million to deputy governors and Ksh3.75 million to speakers for their houses.

City Hall had considered using the Mayor’s official residence along Isaac Gathanju Close in Lavington as the Governor’s residence but the house was occupied by former County Executive Committee (CEC) member Ann Lokidor.

However, in November 2018 the former County Executive Committee was evicted from the residence.

Africans are still evolving. Renting houses for the two for a year will cost less than 10m but since watu lazima wakule, wacha tungoje

I am shocked by that statement that I have highlighted. Eti a governor gets 5m each month as house allowance?

This is what irks me at times.
To start off with, the governor's role in 047 seems pretty redundant now that majority of the county's affairs are run from State House via the proxy that is Nairobi Metropolitan Services.

Then that figure. 500,000,0000

That is enough to change a lot of people's lives. There's an initiative my wife is involved in that seeks way much less than that amount in order to help school-going girls have the decency of sanitary pads.

Did you know that 65% of such girls have to skip school each month, use things like old clothes and mattresses? Anywei, Uhuru amefanya kazi.

Yes the governor might need a house but do we even need a governor and can't she live in a modest home if at all it's that necessary?

Why buy a new governors house while the mayors residence is there? Why not renovate or even knock off and build a new house on that plot?

Nairobi Mayor Now Has An Official Residence

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 17 2012 – George Aladwa is set to become the first mayor to occupy the council’s official residence in the plush Lavington suburb for the first time in 10 years, after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) recovered it from the wife of former Lands Minister Noah Katana Ngala.
Speaking as she handed over the property on Tuesday, EACC acting Chief Executive Officer Jane Muthaura said the illegal acquisition of the Sh157 million property that lies on 0.843 acres had forced the government to incur huge expenses over the last 10 years.

“For those 10 years, the Treasury has been paying allowances for another alternative residence and it is a priority to us that this property does not change hands in the future,” she said.

Aladwa said he was ready to occupy the house once renovations are complete.

“I am happy that the Ngalas voluntarily said that this is public property (and it should be) returned. They went to court (but later) saw the light,” he said.

Ngala’s wife entered into an agreement with the government to hand back the house to the City Council of Nairobi through the EACC. She paid Sh2 million as rent arrears.

Ngala and his wife faced criminal charges at the magistrate’s court over the acquisition of the house. The former minister had been accused of making false representations that he owned the property.

He allegedly transferred the house to his wife between February 1993 and June 2002.

Wueh , relax fellow senator . Watch the below its exactly 472 seconds .

Very soothing. Sometimes I wonder if God apportioned more musical gifts in Jamaica and DRC Congo because of the immense talent in those two nations.
Anywei, of late nimekuwa offensive mode. Wacha nitulie kiasi. At least ka-weekend kamefika.

Kenyans who electing then keep reelecting these politicians should be brought to account.

When it comes to salaries and renumeration there's no party lines, they're all united against your interests. They are remunerated way better than many politicians in developed economies you would think their work is much harder.

In the current scenario politicians are like your mini-kings and you are happy to serve them.

Talk of misplaced priorities. This country is really strange. Seems building governor residence is the new scam.
Why should anyone apart from the president and vice have official residence?

The 350M governor's residence Mutua built totally obliterated those limits, the Senate is incredibly poor at oversight
