Fire Incident - Court 111

A fire accident occurred today in Court 111 at about 2000hrs. At the time, there was a countrywide black out as earlier reported.

Specifically the fire was spotted by children from the neighbouring Block who saw smoke bellowing through the kitchen window overlooking their block.

They immediately came out with their torches. At the time, I had just drove in and I quickly ran to the back of the specific block and witnessed the dark smoke.

We immediately rushed to the specific house and found it locked. We then knocked on the door incessantly as residents who quickly responded to the SoS started alerting the neighbouring houses. A class 7 child who was asleep in the house heard the knocks and woke up. She then opened the door.

Dark smoke had engulfed the entire house. Some neighbours together with the guards then got into the house and immediately evacuated the little girl barely 8 years who was deep asleep in the darkness given there was a black out.

The parents had not yet arrived home from work but shortly checked in shaken. The first responders to the accident also alerted the Fire Brigade.

The first responders with the guards entered the house, they quickly noticed the fire was coming from the kitchen. The fridge was on fire from the top. The children who were asleep indicated they had left a candle at the top of the fridge and fell asleep.

We quickly managed the situation and also removed the gas together with the cooker outside the block. All the windows were then opened wide.

As precaution and to avoid repeat of the same we wish to remind us of the following basic safety measures:

1. To avoid use of candles which was the cause of the fire but instead use safe lighting alternatives in the event a Black Out.

2. To avoid leaving the Gas Cooker on when unattended . It was by sheer luck that in this instant, the gas cooker was not on yet the fridge that burnt was next to the Cooker.

3. Preferably, the metallic door ought to be left open for ease of access in the event of an emergency especially when children are left alone. If the door would not have been opened, the plan was to break the wooden door.

As a court, we shall conduct sentization forums regularly to mitigate against similar occurrences

Chairman - Court 111
