Farming gone Wrong

Farming in any area as an outsider is not easy, this is even amongst housemates and it could be even in your own land.
Cases of theft of produce, equipment, poor workmanship, malice, sabotage and so many other bad things are rife.
Most of the locals do not see the benefits they derive from your investment in terms of employment, cheap/free produce, water.....but want you to fail.
If possible desist from any engagement with the local community. Kuja na watu wako wa job and keep interaction minimum.

there is a skill on de-escalating a situation. Also kama sio kweni unaishi kwa amani na your neighbours, kama vile alikosana na huyo jamaa na akamtumia pesa na madharau hivo, hapo alikuwa ashakosea
Exactly. He ought not have fled. Watu wa hapa huwa ni pesa tu. He should have renegotiated with them, perhaps hao polisi as arbiters. Kisha awanunulie mnazi kiasi chenyewe. Kisha study them and their tendencies well halafu employ the divide and manipulate tactic in future.

1. Back in 2017 mans decided to expand his farming empire. Did some thorough market survey along the coastline on the demand for vegetables kama Terere (Mchicha). This is after being told Nairobi supplies Mombasa with veggies. Nikasema Mimi sio Baba Mboga but naweza tosha Mboga

2. I partnered with a former primary school mate who had lived uko Mombasa for ages. Her Swahili sounded Coasterian, albeit ametoka Nyeri. 😂 We got 6 acres for lease, tukalipa half, balance in a few months. Land had Poultry houses, borehole et al. Great dealImage

3. Sisi hao, went full mode on land preparation. All this while we didn’t have a legally-binding lease agreement. Children, listen up! Never farm on leased land without an agreement! As you’ll learn later in this thread, it will end in premium tears.Image

4. I moved thousands of Spinach seedlings to Mombasa via Coast Bus usiku. Seedlings zikakaa kwa boot, Mimi ‘business class’ calculating how I’ll be the next millionaire, ninunue ka-beach plot Malindi, build a house with a picket fence, White Horse, a Jeep Wrangler nini nini...

5. Loaded FOUR sacks of Spinach seedlings ndani ya Tuk Tuk, I’m that ooonnne...Nyali bridge, Bamburi, Mtwapa, Kanamai alafu nikafika Kwa Kadzengo, just after the Crocodile farm. Was tired but mtaka cha mvunguni shati atoe 😁Image

6. That evening akina Mama Halima landed on my six acre leased farm to transplant the Spinach seedlings. Terere was already doing well (We had dredged the Well {More than 60k ziliishia apa 😩).Image

7. Our Managu and Terere were on fleek mode! The neighbors started getting Green with envy, almost told them we all have the same 24hrs 😂. I contemplated writing a book: “How to farm Mchicha at the Coast; a guide to wealth creation”Image

8. Mimi na kiherehere changu started posting the progress ndio at least nipate kastama pale Mtwapa au Kongowea markets. I’ll admit the progress was AMAZING! We knew Jehovah was about to wipe away our sweat - kumbe ni tears He was about to wipe in less than a week 😂ImageImage

9. Proceeds from the Terere were to start the Poultry biashara, because baby steps nini nini. Small small, the guardian of the ladies we had leased land from started making some tu-comments: “Na hili shamba limenawiri vizuri, ningependa kijisehemu kidogo nipande Mabenda.” 😳😳Image
Image

10. One day our farmhand came to the farm drunk as a skunk. Fired him. Mans alichukua panga threatening to kill us. Honestly I laughed! 😂😂 Mimi huyo sent him his money plus ya kutoa. He got hold of my partner, was almost throwing her in the Well that we drew water from!

11. A caretaker who used to live on the land intervened. I ducked a panga aimed at my head! Next was one aimed at my groin area nikajua baaas! Nisahau kupatiana strokes! 🙈 Si we ran out of that farm while being chased like dogs! (obviously I don’t have the photos tukifukuzwa)Image

12. Long story short, we came back the following day with 6 cops. The caretaker & our farmhand now besties, claimed that we wanted to kill them. They showed the police the panga we wanted to use 🙄 Villagers said “Hawa watu wa Bara wanataka kunyang’anya hawa mayatima shamba!!” 🤷🏿‍♂️Image

13. We called the ladies who owned the land, they said we take our Terere, water pump, sprinklers & drip irrigation kits tuhame immediately! Now how do you uproot Terere na Spinach on 3 acres ulete Nairobi? How? 🤷🏿‍♂️Image

14. With no legal redress since there was no legally-binding lease agreement (@MissKwegah1 I didn’t know you then 😂) we left the land. I boarded a Coast Bus back to Nairobi. Pindi tulipopita Mtito Andei around midnight ivi, I broke down at the back of the bus. 😢

15. I questioned God why He would let us go through aladat without an intervention. Didn’t pray for like three weeks. Nilijam na God. I’m sure He was looking at me like this & asking; “Sasa unataka kulia?” 😂
Lesson learnt: Due diligence lazima!

The End

Interesting, had to dispose land pale kirengit over similar issues, lost coes and sheep !

This nigga used to be in K24 ! I like his resilient ,real hustler .
Long story short we visited a pal and we liked what we saw . we enquired about leasing some land but the dad offered us virgin land to do potato farming for "free".... we invested a good chunck in clearing, buying seedlings yaani all the necessary works..... fast forward to harvesting the results were ok but we decide use the harvest as seedlings ..... a few months down the line I was there 3days before harvesting day....... on D day broker alifika kwa shamba on time and everything flowed smoothly. Jioni kufika broker akatucountia pesa nono and immediately the attitude of that mzae ikachange....
We were to spend the night but we could tell something was a miss tulingia probox yetu tukaanza safari kurudi Nairobi .
FYI. We used to pay him to manage the workers. To date the farm has never been planted.
